I’ve personally slept on and reviewed nontoxic bedding for years. For this guide, I tested the softest sheets made of natural fibers at various price points.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years about wellness, it is that rest is paramount, and our environment is an essential part of sleep hygiene. This includes what we sleep on, from nontoxic mattresses to organic duvets and sheets. This also includes knowing our sleep preferences. Whether you’re a cold sleeper who loves flannel or a hot sleeper who prefers crisp and cool percale, one thing’s certain: You still want your sheets to be soft. Buttery to the touch and comfortable all year round, soft sheets are a game-changer (especially if you like to, ahem, sleep in the nude).

What are the best fabrics for soft sheets?

Natural fibers, fabric quality, weave, and thread count play the biggest roles in how soft your bed sheets will be. Natural materials like Egyptian, pima, and supima cotton, as well as bamboo when blended with premium cotton, tend to create the softest sheets with a smooth and silky feel. Sheets made with these fabrics are of higher quality due to their long-staple fibers that produce a smoother feel than conventional cotton or other materials.

When it comes to weave, the softest you’ll find will be either sateen weave, percale weave, or jersey knit. If you’re looking for that luxurious feel, sateen weave sheets will offer that, while percale and linen soften over time and jersey knit offers a more casual comfy feel.

Now the big question – how does thread count impact all this? We find that the optimal range for soft bed sheets that are still durable will be between 300 and 600 (anything higher than 600 won’t necessarily make your sheets feel any softer). And don’t forget, when it comes to maintaining the softness of your bed sheets, how you care for them makes all the difference! Using mild detergents will help keep your bed sheets in the best shape for long-term use.

What are the relevant certifications for nontoxic bedding?

We look for the following certifications when shopping for organic cotton sheets:

GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton and other textile components. Textile products must be made from 95% certified organic raw materials to become GOTS Certified. GOTS also requires strict worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor, and its rigorous certification process requires that its environmental and social criteria are met throughout the entire textile supply chain, ensuring everyone involved is cared for.
MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a nontoxic certification for everyday products, including bedding. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is heavily screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or limited.
GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your bedding meets some of the world’s most comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.
OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a bedding product is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
Fair Trade Certification: One of the most meticulous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that the bedding materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. To become a B Corp, organizations must be verified through B Lab (and are given a numerical rating), a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy.
The Climate Label Certified: Climate Label Certified brands measure their emissions, implement plans to reduce them, invest in climate solutions, and publicly share their progress, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and ongoing climate action.
1% for the Planet: Brands that are members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.
PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. It’s best to review that the entire product is vegan and not just a handful of the components.

How should you take care of your soft sheets?

In general, it’s best to wash your sheets on a gentle cycle with mild liquid detergent and then tumble dry on low. Or, better yet, let nature do the work naturally and hang them up to dry in the breeze! More specifically, your sheets will tell you how best to care for them, so follow the instructions on the label if you’re uncertain.

I personally slept in, washed and lounged around in each pair listed below, making notes on softness, breathability, durability and maintenance. I’ve ranked them in order of softness — and if I felt it was a tie, I factored in price, durability, and sustainability standards.

Kate’s Review: ettitude rings in at the top of the list for its supreme softness – so smooth it feels like liquid on my skin when I crawl into bed. My husband and 5-year-old daughter also noted that this set was their favorite, both of whom are very sensory oriented. My only note for readers is regarding their wearability: The material reveals any blemish, so if you share a bed with children or find yourself prone to spills (drool? who, me? 😉), keep this in mind.

2. Brooklinen

Is there anything more luxurious to sleep in than cashmere? Well, maybe Brooklinen’s Heathered Cashmere sheets (made with cotton and Himalayan cashmere). Thoughtfully designed, these sheets are brushed for optimal softness, fully OEKO-TEX certified, and machine-washable (though you may want to keep a de-pilling device on hand; it is cashmere, after all). Kate’s Review: Brooklinen has mastered the art of affordable luxury. The brand offsets the high price of bedding by shortening the length of its supply chain as well as forgoing some of the more premium certifications that can increase costs, while still prioritizing safe materials with an OEKO-TEX certification. And despite having wool in its composition, the set is surprisingly light and airy. As someone who has roots in the Midwest (and Minnesota in particular), cashmere is a core value of mine, and I will recommend this set all day long for those looking for warmth, comfort, and indulgence.

3. Sijo

Sijo’s sheets are so cooling and silky; you know the feeling of having clean shaved legs and slipping into freshly laundered sheets? That’s what our Sijo sheets feel like every day. This brand is dedicated to “bedding made better,” and its airy eucalyptus line is simultaneously cooling, lightweight, and supremely soft. We also love that you can order a sheet set without a top sheet if you’re like us millennials who prefer to sleep without one. 😉 Using 100 percent TENCEL lyocell, these sheets are also anti-microbial, hypoallergenic, and free of harmful chemicals.

Kate’s Review: Sijo’s well-constructed sheets are luxurious and their price point makes them more accessible than many other sustainable bedding brands. Not only are Coyuchi’s sheet sets endlessly soft and crisp (magically!), but they’re also sustainably made, saving up to 2000+ days of drinking water and nine miles worth of driving emissions. The Organic Crinkled Percale Sheets are another great option for warm sleepers, with just the right amount of wrinkle for that effortless “worn in” look. The organic cotton is grown in India, and every part of the production is done ethically. If the retail price feels too out of reach, consider Coyuchi’s secondhand shop as well for discounted options.

Kate’s Review: I’ve had a crush on Coyuchi for their commitment to sustainability, and I invested in my first pair before becoming a parent. Our flannel set has held up beautifully for five years and counting! For this review, I tested their organic cotton sateen set, which is buttery soft straight out of the box and has somehow become even softer after the wash. After years of testing organic cotton sheets from sustainable brands, these continue to be my top choice.

I’ve been sleeping on Coyuchi sheets for years, and these didn’t disappoint – I love how they get softer with each wash.

5. Naturepedic

When it comes to certifications, few bedding brands come close to Naturepedic. Founded with family-safe, nontoxic materials in mind, their entire Ohio factory is GOTS certified — the gold standard for organic cotton textiles — and the brand also meets OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class 1, MADE SAFE, and GREENGUARD Gold standards. In 2024, they became the first brand to meet the EWG VERIFIED® Mattresses standard — a milestone worth celebrating. They’re also 1% for the Planet certified, donating 1% of annual sales to environmental causes. The result is bedding you can truly trust, especially for little ones. For the household that wants safety and sustainability receipts, Naturepedic delivers.

Kate’s Review: Naturepedic is peak quiet luxury. These sheets are soft, cool, and have a sustainability reputation that is hard to beat. This crisp white set is classically beautiful and feels like hotel quality in the very best way. While the price point is higher than most, supporting a family-owned business that crafts everything they make with intention feels like an act of rebellion in the era of cheap goods and brands that prioritize profits over people and the planet.

If you’re looking for crisp, cotton sheets that make your bed feel like a luxury hotel, these Naturepedic ones are it.

6. Avocado

Avocado built its name on mattresses, but the sheets deserve just as much attention. Made from GOTS-certified organic cotton grown in India without chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and certified to MADE SAFE® standards, these are among the most rigorously vetted sheets on our list. Available in a true 400-thread count single-ply or 600-thread count two-ply, the sateen finish gives them a subtle sheen and a buttery, wrinkle-resistant feel. Avocado is also a B Corporation and Climate Neutral Certified, with a verified 48% reduction in emissions since 2021 — sustainability receipts that are hard to beat. Kate’s Review: Avocado offers lustrous organic cotton bedding at various price points based on size and thread count, which allows consumers to choose which tier they prefer without compromising on ethical or sustainable business practices. I have been sleeping on their organic cotton set for years and can attest that these are silky to the touch and lighter weight than most other organic cotton options on this list. Over time, I’ve noticed a few threads here and there, so be sure to wash these as gently as possible and adhere to their directions. And if you’re in the market for a new mattress, I recommend throwing these in your cart for a full bedding overhaul and calling it a day.

7. Lunaweft

If your skincare routine ends when your head hits the pillow, Lunaweft wants to change that. Their bedding is woven from a blend of casein milk protein and organic cotton — a material that’s naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and pH-balanced to match your skin. The result is something that feels lighter than silk and genuinely soothing for sensitive sleepers. It’s a novel concept in sustainable bedding, and one we find compelling. Because Lunaweft is a newer brand, there’s not much information on major third-party certifications yet, so we’d love to see more transparency around sourcing and manufacturing — but the innovative material and skin-first ethos are worth watching!

Kate’s Review: I’m intrigued by Lunaweft’s innovative sheets and am eager to see how the material interacts with my sensitive skin over time. This pair is airy, lighter weight than any of the others on this list and soothing to the touch. Note that pillowcases are sold separately, which could be beneficial for those who want to focus their budget in this area and simply add a pair of Lunaweft pillowcases to their existing bedding.

I was so intrigued by Lunaweft‘s casein milk protein and organic cotton blend bed sheets! They’re the lightest sheets I’ve ever slept on.

8. Greenrow

GreenRow is the sustainability-focused home brand launched by Williams-Sonoma, Inc. in 2023, and its TENCEL bedding is a standout. Woven from 100% TENCEL Lyocell in a sand-washed finish, these sheets are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified and made in a Fair Trade Certified factory. TENCEL’s closed-loop production process reuses 99.5% of its solvents and uses approximately 11 times less water than cotton, making it one of the more environmentally responsible fabric choices in this category. The result is a silky, draped feel that’s breathable and naturally moisture-wicking — ideal for warm sleepers. GreenRow TENCEL bedding starts at $199.

Kate’s Review: Greenrow’s vintage-inspired bedding considers the entire lifecycle of its linens, a sustainable practice that earns top marks in my eyes as a sustainability editor. Their whimsical, earthy patterns are grounding, designed to last and grow increasingly softer with every wash. Reader take note: This brand specifically instructs using grey-water friendly, biodegradable laundry soap and to line or tumble dry on low.

9. Pact

Pact is best known for its ethical apparel, but don’t sleep on its affordable bedding — or, actually, you should. With hundreds of five-star reviews, the Organic Cool-Air Percale Sheet Set is available in six sizes, so you can have that hotel bed experience wherever you are. The fabric is 100% GOTS-certified premium organic cotton — made responsibly in India — silky and snuggly without being too warm. Pact also holds Fair Trade Certified and SimpliZero carbon offset certifications, so ethical standards are met at every step of the supply chain. They also arrive in reusable cloth bags with no single-use plastic in sight, a detail worth noting. These sheets were named Best Cotton Sheets of 2020 by the Sleep Foundation, and starting at $160 for a queen set, they remain one of the best values on this list.

Kate’s Review: Pact’s sheets are my go-to recommendation for high quality sheets that don’t break the bank. Their percale set is durable, crisp and cool, and comes in seven different colorways, offering enough options for any style while still keeping each classic enough that they won’t go out of style. These are often also on sale, so keep an eye out for further savings around major holidays. Pact is the perfect one-stop organic cotton shop – grab all of your organic apparel and bedding basics in one go and call it a day.

10. Piglet in Bed

Founded in a garden shed in Sussex in 2017, Piglet in Bed started with three shades of linen and a belief that beautiful bedding shouldn’t require ironing or a second mortgage. They now offer 100% linen, a linen-cotton blend (55% European linen, 45% long-staple cotton), and a cotton percale collection — all OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. Their linen is sourced from European flax grown in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, certified by European Flax®, and all cotton is sourced through the Better Cotton Initiative. Everything is woven by a family-run mill in Portugal with a century of textile expertise. Kate’s Review: Piglet In Bed’s linen-cotton blend is to thank for their sturdy construction and is also why their softness ranking is a hair lower than the others, but don’t be fooled — this set beautifully balances comfort with hard-wearing durability, which is why I reach for these more than most of the others on this list. I have kids, which means my sheets need to hold up against daily pillow fights, roughhousing, and tug of war battles. The set also endures frequent spills, and I am never worried about running them through the wash again. The set is pretty without being precious and gets softer with every wash. I’m certain these will easily last us a decade, even with daily wear.
